Jonathan started riding at the age of 8 years old. He grew up in Durban and participated in Showing, Equitation, Dressage, Showjumping and Eventing in Childrens and Juniors. Jonathan won 7 South African Junior Championships in the various disciplines.
After school, Jonathan went overseas and rode in Germany for 6 months and in the USA for a year under various instructors including George Morris and Nelson Pessoa. Jonathan also completed two years of National Service with the South African National Defence Force in Potchefstroom under Kommandant Stark, participating in Adult Interprovincial for the SANDF in Showjumping and Eventing.
Whilst employed at Carlswald Club as an instructor, Jonathan produced Davetsaub Lombard who went on to win South African Adult Showjumping Championships in 1996. Jonathan and Lombard then went overseas together successfully campaigning to be in the South African Equestrian Team at the World Equestrian Games in Rome in 1998. During that time, the pair was also placed in the Hickstead Derby before Jonathan returned to South Africa.
Jonathan’s next top level horse, Mossandi Diadem, placed in the South African Derby twice and won the World Cup Qualifier Series. Jonathan then went on to represent South Africa in the TriNations Series with New Zealand and Australia in 2006 and the All Africa Games in Algeria in 2007.
For the past few years, Jonathan has competed several horses belonging to Mark and Di Slade including Felix van de Mispelaere who partnered with him to win the South African Showjumping Championship in 2015 amongst various other open classes. Jonathan’s current string of open horses include Hummer van het Bevrijdthof, Southern Comfort, Jerba and Enouche, belonging to Slade Equestrian and Esaro W belonging to Tamzyn Wegrostek. Jonathan is currently producing his own two young horses, Callaho Conny Vella and Pohlands Macchiato, which he owns with Stephanie Aproskie.
