South Africa Equestrian Athlete
Alexa (Lexi) was born on 16 May 1996.
She attended Beaulieu Preparatory School and matriculated from Beaulieu College in 2014, receiving a B-aggregate (including a distinction). She was captain of the College’s equestrian team and also represented the College in athletics, swimming and hockey.
Growing up in Beaulieu, she was always surrounded by horses and so she started riding at the age of 3. Lexi got her first pony, a multi-discipline schoolmaster, when she was 7.
Lexi was privileged to compete in all Disciplines and received provincial/state colours in vaulting, showing, dressage, eventing, jumping and equitation. She was the holder of several provincial and national titles, including the Iwanosky dressage award, the Philip Smith Memorial Equitation Championship and the SA High Schools’ Open Jumping Champion.
Lexi has represented South Africa in equestrian competitions since the age of 10. She competed in Vaulting at the World Equestrian Games in 2006 (Aachen, Germany), 2010 (Kentucky, USA) and 2014 (Normandy, France); the European Vaulting Championships in 2007 (Kaposvar, Hungary) and 2011 (Le Mans, France); the World Vaulting Championships in 2008 (Brno, Czech Republic); and European Junior Vaulting Championships in 2012 (Pezinok, Slovakia). She was twice a member of the Pony Rider jumping teams that competed against Australia and New Zealand. She won the final of the SA leg of the FEI Childrens’ Jumping Challenge, which took her to the finals in Abu Dhabi, UAE. In 2013 she jumped at the Horse of the Year in New Zealand and in 2014 she represented South Africa at WEG, at the FEI World Jumping Challenge and also at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.
Lexi is now based at and competes from the yard of Hilmar Meyer in Thedinghausen, Germany. Hilmar has supported SA Jumping for many years as sponsor of the Hilmar Meyer Young Rider series. Lexi has competed throughout Germany and also in Spain, Netherlands, Belgium and Albania. She has had many notable successes in recent times, including in 2015 a win in the Puissance in Filsum; in 2016 a win at Hagen International 2*, 2nd place at both Forst 3* and Harsum 3*, a 3rd place at Elmlohe 4*, and 6th place at both Verden 2* International Grand Prix and Allersehl 3* International Grand Prix. This year she qualified for and finished the Hamburg Derby International 4* and was placed 2nd at the Hamburg Derby International 2* (speed class) and won both the Eschweiler International Master class 3* and the Elmlohe GP 4* (the first prize being a car!).
Lexi recently received recognition from the German National Federation when she was awarded the prestigious Goldenes Reitabzeichen (Golden Riding Badge) at the Verden International Show in August 2017. This is an award with very restrictive qualifying criteria based on successes in S-class tournaments (open 1.40-and-up).
Lexi and Chacco Top (Chacco-Blue/Graf Top) will feature on the main page of the Hannoveraner Verband e.V. programme for its 134th annual elite-auction to be held 13-14 October 2017. The Verband are preparing a TV presentation on them for the occasion.
Lexi has always been supported by her family – her mom hacked around over weekends and her dad evented, whilst her sister Eleni also competed successfully in all Disciplines and represented South Africa in Vaulting at WEG 2006 & 2014. But Lexi would have had little success if not for the support and dedication of her instructors. She was first instructed in the bunny ring by the late Eilika Larkins. Terry Franz corrected her “duck feet” and Nicole de Villiers kept her bum on a ten-rand note. Yvonne Bolton instructed her as a child/junior and Lorette Knowles-Taylor in the Young Rider/Adult ranks; both have had a tremendous influence on her career. Dominy Alexander and Karen Keller also contributed much to her grounding as a rider.
Lexi receives widespread and frequent coverage in various articles published in newspapers and in equestrian and sports media publications at home and abroad. Her social media links are Facebook: Alexa Stais Equestrian Athlete and Instagram: @lexistais16
